The Smile Suite, Clifton
Originally a family home, this four-storey Victorian property in Clifton underwent a full internal refurbishment, including extensive structural alterations, at the hands of the Embossed Construction Ltd team in order that it could be used as a dental practice, complete with sterilisation room, X-ray room, accessible WC and electrically-controlled sliding glass door. The X-ray room required specialist products, which had to be installed following strict guidelines, to prevent the transmission of harmful radiation. Tanking works were carried out to improve the water-resistance of the basement walls. Specialist chemical-restistant waste pipework had to be used in the sterilisation room. The waste was then passed through a decontamination unit to prevent harmful chemicals entering the waterways and becoming an environmental hazard. Planning Consent had to be sought to change the classification of the property from Residential to Commercial. In order to achieve this, safety-glass had to be installed since the height of the original, ornate handrail was insufficient and did not meet current Building Regulations. Other aspects of this project include: the installation of baby-changing facilities; removal of carpet tiles (including adhesives and latex-coatings) from the lobby floor, uncovering the original floor tiles- these were then subjected to an extensive revival effort to restore the floor to it's original beauty.
